Importing into Australia
For most consignments valued at A$1,000 or less there is nothing to pay at the border, because GST is collected by the seller at the point of sale instead. Above that, the Australian Border Force collects GST, duty and an import processing charge before the goods are released.
A$1,000 or less usually clears without a border charge
For most goods in a consignment with a customs value of A$1,000 or less there are no duties, taxes or charges payable at import. Alcohol and tobacco are the exception and are taxed at any value.
One consignment over A$1,000 is taxed as a whole
The threshold applies per consignment, not per item. Several low-value purchases shipped together as one consignment with a combined customs value over A$1,000 become taxable at the border — so combining orders can change the outcome even when each item was individually under the limit.
Above the threshold there is a processing charge too
Consignments over A$1,000 need a full import declaration, and you pay all relevant duties and taxes plus an import processing charge. That charge is separate from the tax itself.
You are the importer, not the forwarder
The Australian Taxation Office treats the purchaser as the ultimate consignee, noting that a freight forwarder or logistics company would not normally hold that role. The customs obligations sit with you as the buyer.
