Importing into South Africa

Typically the courier clears the parcel and recovers import VAT, any duty and its own handling fee from you. SARS lets private individuals import personal goods without registering as an importer, using a generic customs code, provided the conditions below are met. If a prepaid-duty option is offered at checkout, those government charges would be included there instead.

i

You do not need an importer code for personal goods

SARS allows personal goods to be cleared under the generic code 70707070 rather than requiring you to register as an importer. The goods must be for your own use or home consumption, not for resale, and you must be located in South Africa.

i

There is an annual ceiling of R150,000

The allowance under that generic code is a cumulative R150,000 per calendar year across one or more transactions. Since late 2025 SARS automatically rejects further declarations once you pass it, and you then have to apply for a formal customs code before that shipment can be cleared.

i

Your ID number goes on the declaration

Clearing under the generic code requires your identity number, passport number or taxpayer reference number in the field provided on the declaration form, so have it ready when you enter your delivery details.

i

Expect import VAT regardless of how small the parcel is

The historic relief that let very low-value consignments through without VAT has been withdrawn, and import VAT now applies to imported goods generally. Confirm the current treatment for your goods with SARS before assuming a small parcel arrives untaxed.

Import rules change, sometimes at short notice. Before a large purchase, confirm the current position with South African Revenue Service β€” SARS on importing personal goods from abroad. We last checked these sources on 19 August 2026. Your country sets the government rates. How they are collected β€” on delivery, or included when you pay if that option is offered β€” depends on the shipping method at checkout.

Four U.S. orders. One shipment through SARS.

Hold purchases at your suite, combine the eligible ones, and send a single consignment to Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban. One carrier bill instead of four air-freight invoices.

Combining cuts the number of international carrier charges. It does not change the duties or taxes South Africa assesses on the goods. You see the live price for the actual box, not a sample rate.

Shipping to South Africa: common questions

?

Who charges import duty and VAT on packages entering South Africa?

South African customs assesses duty and VAT on the shipment from its declared contents and value. How they are collected β€” usually from the recipient at delivery, or included when you pay if a prepaid option is offered β€” depends on the shipping method at checkout.

?

Can I combine multiple orders into one shipment to South Africa?

Yes. Orders from different U.S. stores arrive under your suite number and eligible packages can be combined, so you pay a single international shipping charge instead of one per box.

?

What cannot be shipped to South Africa?

Goods that cannot travel by air are excluded, including aerosols, flammable liquids and loose lithium batteries, and South Africa applies its own import restrictions as well. See prohibited items.

?

Can I see photos of a package before shipping it?

Yes. Once a package arrives you can request photos to check its condition and confirm the contents before paying to send it on.
