Importing into Brazil
Outside the Remessa Conforme programme, you pay through the Correios site or the courier’s system after the charge is issued, and the parcel is only released once payment is confirmed. Receita Federal allows 20 days from the billing date.
Your CPF is mandatory on every parcel
Receita Federal requires the recipient’s CPF or CNPJ in good standing — or a passport number for a foreign national — for any international parcel. Get this right when you enter your delivery details, because a missing or irregular number stalls clearance.
The reduced rate depends on where you bought, not how it ships
The zero rate on purchases up to US$50 applies to sites certified under the Remessa Conforme programme, where tax is collected at checkout. A purchase from an ordinary U.S. retailer that is then forwarded is not a certified-site purchase, so expect the general rule for the simplified regime instead.
State ICMS is charged either way
Receita Federal is explicit that ICMS, the state tax of 17% to 20% depending on your state, applies even where import tax is zero. There is no scenario in which a parcel arrives entirely untaxed.
The customs value includes freight and insurance
The simplified regime covers parcels with a customs value up to US$3,000, and that value is the goods plus freight plus insurance — so shipping forms part of the figure the tax is calculated against.
Import rules change, sometimes at short notice. Before a large purchase, confirm the current position with Receita Federal — Receita Federal manual for international parcels. How they are collected — on delivery, or included when you pay if that option is offered — depends on the shipping method at checkout.

Who charges the import tax on packages arriving in Brazil?
Brazilian customs assesses import taxes on the shipment based on its contents and declared value. Combining packages does not change what customs assesses. How the charges are collected — usually at delivery, or included when you pay if a prepaid option is offered — depends on the shipping method at checkout.
Will my shipment be inspected by Brazilian customs?
Customs can open and inspect any international shipment. The most effective thing you can do is describe items specifically — "cotton t-shirt" rather than "clothing" — because vague descriptions are a common cause of holds.
