Importing into Mexico

Your traveller allowance does not apply to parcels
This is the most common misunderstanding. The duty-free franquicia — the few hundred dollars you may bring in personally by air, land or sea — is for passengers arriving with their goods. It has nothing to do with something a courier delivers to your door, and it does not transfer to a shipment.
Confirm the current courier threshold with SAT
There is a low-value ceiling below which courier shipments clear without import duty and IVA, and further ceilings governing what a registered courier can clear without you joining the importers register. We are not quoting figures because we could not confirm the current ones on an official SAT page, and Mexican customs rules are revised regularly.
IVA is separate from duty
Being under a duty threshold does not automatically mean no tax. Value added tax and duty are assessed separately, so a parcel can clear free of duty and still carry IVA.
Keep the purchase evidence
Mexican customs values goods on documented evidence, and an invoice or sales receipt is what establishes what you actually paid. Without it the value can be determined for you, generally not in your favour.
Import rules change, sometimes at short notice. Before a large purchase, confirm the current position with Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT) — SAT customs information. We last checked these sources on 19 August 2026. Your country sets the government rates. How they are collected — on delivery, or included when you pay if that option is offered — depends on the shipping method at checkout.
