Importing into France

Typically La Poste or the courier handles clearance and bills you for VAT and any duty, along with its own "frais de dossier". French customs is explicit that those handling fees are the carrier’s own charge and not a tax, and that some carriers invoice after the parcel has already been delivered. If a prepaid-duty option is offered at checkout, those government charges would be included there instead.

i

VAT is due from the first euro

Douane applies TVA to every import, exactly as it would to a purchase made in France, with no low-value exemption. The standard rate is 20%.

i

The €150 duty relief was withdrawn in July 2026

Distance sales into the EU up to €150 previously entered duty free. That relief was abolished on 1 July 2026 and replaced with a flat €3 customs duty per item, currently scheduled to apply until 1 July 2028. Other low-value consignments that are not treated as distance sales are charged at the normal tariff rate instead of the flat €3.

i

"En douane" usually means paperwork, not a problem

Douane points out that tracking statuses like "en douane" or "bloqué en douane" are wording chosen by the carrier and generally mean clearance formalities are in progress. It directs customers to the carrier rather than to customs.

i

Customs will never text or email you for payment

Douane states it never contacts anyone by SMS or email asking them to pay duties on a parcel. Messages of that kind are a common scam aimed at people expecting a delivery, so treat them accordingly.

Import rules change, sometimes at short notice. Before a large purchase, confirm the current position with French Customs (Douane) Douane advice on buying online from outside the EU. We last checked these sources on 20 August 2026. Your country sets the government rates. How they are collected — on delivery, or included when you pay if that option is offered — depends on the shipping method at checkout.

Four U.S. boutiques. One parcel into France.

Shop the American sites that will not ship to Paris or Lyon. Eligible packages leave as one consignment — one carrier charge, one tracking number.

Combining cuts the number of international carrier charges. It does not change the duties or taxes France assesses on the goods. You see the live price for the actual box, not a sample rate.
