Importing into Germany
Typically Deutsche Post or the courier clears the parcel and collects import VAT and any duty from you, plus its own service fee. Zoll does not publish what carriers charge for that service, so ask the carrier if you want the figure up front. If a prepaid-duty option is offered at checkout, those government charges would be included there instead.
There is no longer a duty-free allowance under β¬150
Until mid-2026 online orders up to β¬150 came in duty free. Since 1 July 2026 that relief is gone: online purchases up to β¬150 attract a flat β¬3 per goods category, and other consignments up to β¬150 are charged at the normal tariff rate for the item. This arrangement is temporary and is currently set to run until 1 July 2028.
Import VAT applies from the first euro
Einfuhrumsatzsteuer is charged at 19%, with a reduced 7% rate on goods such as food and books. It is calculated on the customs value plus any duty and the transport cost, not on the item price alone.
Goods from the US get no tariff preference
Zoll states plainly that imports from countries including the USA do not receive tariff preferences. Where duty applies it is charged at the full rate, so do not expect a trade-agreement discount on an American purchase.
Do not leave a parcel sitting at customs
Storage charges of at least β¬5 start once a parcel has been held for ten days. Letters are kept for seven days and parcels for nine before being returned to the sender, so respond promptly to a customs notification.
Import rules change, sometimes at short notice. Before a large purchase, confirm the current position with German Customs (Zoll) β Zoll guidance on internet orders from outside the EU. We last checked these sources on 19 August 2026. Your country sets the government rates. How they are collected β on delivery, or included when you pay if that option is offered β depends on the shipping method at checkout.
American shops, one shipment into Germany.
Electronics, sneakers and care packages can wait together at the warehouse. When you are ready, eligible items leave as one consignment to Berlin, Munich or Hamburg.
Combining cuts the number of international carrier charges. It does not change the duties or taxes Germany assesses on the goods. You see the live price for the actual box, not a sample rate.

Home DepotShipping to Germany: common questions
How are import VAT and duty handled on shipments to Germany?
German customs assesses import VAT and any duty on the shipment based on its declared contents and value. How they are collected β usually before delivery, or included when you pay if a prepaid option is offered β depends on the shipping method at checkout.
Can I combine several U.S. orders into one shipment to Germany?
Yes. Purchases from different retailers arrive at the same facility under your suite number, and eligible packages can be combined into a single shipment on request.
What items cannot be sent to Germany?
Anything that cannot travel by air is excluded β aerosols, flammable liquids, loose lithium batteries and similar. German and EU import rules add restrictions of their own, so it is worth checking a category before you buy it. See prohibited items.
What determines the shipping cost to Germany?
The destination, the weight and dimensions of the shipment, and the carrier and service level you choose. You review the available options for your specific shipment before paying.
