Importing into United Kingdom
Typically the courier or postal service contacts you with a bill for any VAT, duty and their own handling charge before they hand the parcel over. If a prepaid-duty option is offered at checkout, those government charges would be included there instead.
VAT applies to essentially everything
HMRC charges VAT on goods sent to the UK from outside it, with an exception for gifts worth £39 or less. There is no low-value shopping allowance that lets a purchase in duty and VAT free.

The charge is calculated on more than the item price
HMRC applies duty to the price paid for the goods plus postage, packaging and insurance — so the shipping cost forms part of the value being taxed, not just the product.
Unpaid parcels go back
The carrier normally holds a parcel for about three weeks. If the bill is unpaid by then it is returned to sender, so it is worth watching for that notification.

Do I pay VAT and duty on U.S. purchases arriving in the UK?
UK customs assesses VAT and any duty on the shipment according to its contents and declared value. How they are collected — usually by the carrier or customs at delivery, or included when you pay if a prepaid option is offered — depends on the shipping method at checkout.
Some U.S. stores already ship to the UK. Why use a U.S. address?
Many retailers still do not ship to the UK, and others restrict which items they will send abroad. A U.S. address lets you buy from any of them, and lets you combine several orders into one shipment instead of paying to send each separately.
Can I track my shipment on its way to the UK?
